Taiwans Hornor- Roger Chou wins the PMI 2009 Distinguished Contribution Award
Orlando,Florida, Oct, 10thRoger Chou was awarded the Project Management Institute (PMI®) Distinguished Contribution Award for his dedication to the profession and practice of project management.
The PMI Distinguished Contribution Award recognizes significant achievement for sustained performance by an individual who contributes to the advancement of the project management. There are only 8 receivers of this award, but thousands of nominees coming from the world were expecting receiving it.
Roger Chou was the only one Chinese to receive the award at the PMI 2009 Awards Ceremony. He is the first PgMP in Asia, and was being nominated for this award in this April, by six individuals, including Legislator Chao-Shun Huang and Shiing-Jer Twu, the Chairman of Century Iron and Steel Industrial Co. Ltd., Chin-Yu Chou, the president of Association of Taiwan Journalists, FENG-CHIA CHUANG, the Head of Soochow Universitys Extension School, Ping-Wen Lin and PMO of Taiwan Semiconductor Manufacturing Company Ltd. (TSMC), Chung-Cheng Ni.
For years, I have witnessed Mr. Chous work every step along the way, says Legislator Chao Shun Huang. He started with a small community of 50 PMPs, which has grown into an incorporated association of more than 1000 professional members in just 2 years She also comments, Roger Chou is a courageous, persistent and selflessly project manager, who has devoted to making our homeland a better place. I have seen breakthroughs in both quantity and quality in the field of project management in Taiwan.
In the past four years, Roger and his company, PM-ABC have trained over 3,000 PMPs, boosting the number of qualified project managers in Taiwan to 5,388, bringing Taiwan into the top eight countries of PMI trained project managers.
FENG-CHIA CHUANG, the president of Association of Taiwan Journalists, also said, with Roger and PM-ABCs endeavors in continuing reports in the media on the success of well-managed construction projects, all of Taiwanese society has started to pay attention to this globally recognized certificate and has increasingly embraced the benefits of having substantial numbers of individuals possessing professionalism in project management.
Legislator Shiing-Jer Twu added, for years, Roger has been kept lobbying our government to pass the Project Management Act, so as to raise the recognition of certified project manager in Taiwanese society. This April, as Taiwans national competitiveness dropped, Roger wrote a State Affair Memorandum to the President of the R.O.C., suggesting how the government could use professional project management to reduce major construction projects risks and improve their quality. The President replied positively, and has vowed to take his advice seriously. This response from the Presidents Office was then followed by an invitation from the Executive Yuans Public Construction Commission, asking Roger to present the PM-ABC project management course materials for their evaluation.
Recently, as Typhoon Morakot hit Taiwan and left many dead or destitute, and large parts of southern Taiwan without access to power or water. As President of the Institute of Taiwan Project Management (ITPM), Roger brought together over 300 volunteers who were certified project managers. Together we would help with the Emergency Rescue and Disaster Relief Operations by developing the Morakot Flood Disaster Reconstruction and Preparation WBS Plan., said Roger. This is Taiwans first complete standard operations procedures developed by a non-governmental association, which aims to systematically and efficiently guide future reconstruction work.
This WBS Plan has been sent to the Presidents Office, the Executive Yuan, the Post-Flood Reconstruction Committee, the Domestic Affairs Bureau, the Major Construction Association, the Taiwan Red Cross and other related charity organizations. Roger says, I hope by offering our help to the government and other organizations, our project management experience will help improve the current relief effort, and better prepare us for future natural disasters.
Roger also comments: I am very pleased and delighted to put our project management professionalism to such great use. It has been the greatest achievement of my career. Nothing can compare with the satisfaction of a successful disaster relief operation!
The PMI Awards Program recognizes excellence in project management across a broad array of categories for organizations, individuals, community advancement and our chapters and their volunteers, said Gregory Balestrero, president and CEO of PMI.
